A series of cold weather fronts seems to have Spring on the run at the moment, but living in London teaches us that the weather here can turn on a five pence piece and often does. To help usher in warmer climes many Londoners will be checking out new dance productions as nothing brightens the spirits so much as taking in some fresh and new choreography. It can also serve as a reminder to get down to the gym!

Sam Smith – O2 Arena
Sam Smith – O2 Arena
Having avoided the trap of overexposure that so many talent show winners fall into, Smith has gradually built up a credible repertoire of material to go with his new image and improved vocal range. Success in the US has help give him time to prepare which is important as his act relies heavily on gimmick-free delivery and a close rapport with his audiences.

The O2 show is part of an arena tour that will see Smith take on a select number of shows which is also wise as it protects his voice while still allowing him to play to a large amount of his fans. His strength lies in the emotional impact of his ballads and with this in mind, his band will be augmented by a string section and backing singers. Undoubtedly there will be massive cheers for his breakthrough single “Stay With Me”.

Strictly Ballroom: The Musical – Piccadilly Theatre
Strictly Ballroom: The Musical – Piccadilly Theatre
As a surprise movie hit, this quirky drama about competitive ballroom dancing in 80s Australia won many hearts and the same effect is predicted for this West End version. The story focuses on the exploits of Scott Hastings as he attempts to throw off the shackles of traditional ballroom rules in order to create spectacle and excitement.

A tight script together with some dazzling costumes ensures that Scott’s story of his struggle to overcome establishment obstacles is kept light-hearted and optimistic, but it’s the incredible dancing and choreography that form the beating heart of this production. Audiences brought up on today’s plethora of televised dance shows will appreciate every step, hip swivel and lift as this glitzy show spins towards its ultimate feel good climax.

A selection of specially commissioned pieces are to be performed in London by some of the brightest young talents in UK dance. April will see members of the ENB throw out their traditional routines in favour of something a bit more daring as they take on works by Stravinsky and Jerome Robbins among others.

Contemporary dance can be a challenging genre but audiences will be rewarded by some thrilling set pieces as dancers and choreographers attempt to deconstruct, redefine and celebrate all that has gone before them.
